FROM ARIZONA TO ZIMBABWE: WHAT EVERYONE OUGHT TO KNOW ABOUT CAMBRIDGE AS & A LEVELS

Cambridge Assessment International Education is the world’s largest provider of grades 9-12 international education. Thanks to great partnerships with the Center for the Future of Arizona, AZTransfer, state universities, and Maricopa Community College District, there are over 20 Arizona high schools, including Lee Williams High School, sending Cambridge graduates to Arizona community colleges and universities. Arizona high schools have incorporated Cambridge’s international curriculum, including Global Perspectives and Research. This session shares what you need to know to recruit these students, including the curriculum and assessments for AS and A Levels, credit by exam recommendations, and official documentation and results services.

HOW TO USE ASSIST DATA TO TRACK COURSE TRANSFER EFFECTIVENESS

A few years ago, a particular world language department at a state university was expressing doubts about the quality of the education students transferring from the Maricopa Community Colleges were receiving. This department felt--with no evidence presented--that some of the Maricopa students were not properly prepared for transfer into sequential classes at that university. As both Languages ATF chair and Maricopa Languages IC chair at the time, I worked with ASSIST and the MCCCD Institutional Effectiveness personnel to track how Maricopa language students perform in sequential classes at the three state universities.

GUIDED PATHWAYS AND GUIDING ADVISORS INTO PROGRAM EXPERTISE FOR STUDENT SUCCESS

Rio Salado College and the Maricopa Community Colleges are moving into a Guided Pathways model. Advisors that have been advising for all programs will specialize in a smaller grouping of programs by “field of interest.” This specialization will allow an advisor to develop a deeper knowledge of curricular and co-curricular requirements as well as career and transfer opportunities. Rio has organized faculty and advisors around the fields of interest and are developing further resources for Rio programs and transfer opportunities. This new model will also provide a greater opportunity for community college advisors to collaborate more fully with university colleagues.

EMBEDDING COLLEGE ADVISORS INTO LOCAL HIGH SCHOOLS

Learn how MCC is reversing the trend of decreased enrollment among Mesa Public High School graduates through the MCC College Advisor Program. This session will highlight how the team provides one-stop enrollment experiences at each high school to recruit students, provide seamless transition to MCC, increase dual enrollment, create a college going culture at the schools, and build relationships. At a time when timelines are getting earlier, competition has never been fiercer, and costs continue to rise, the MCC College Advisor program proves that it is possible to increase enrollment and change college going culture of a school from within.

MAKING DUAL ENROLLMENT CREDITS COUNT. HOW TO TRANSFER TO A UNIVERSITY WITH AN A.A. FROM HIGH SCHOOL

Student success is the number one priority in dual enrollment. Learn how to maximize dual enrollment courses focusing on transfer and completion. Discussion will be centered on a success coaching model that aligns high school course offering with transferability and completion as the end goal. Under the success coach model completion numbers have grown from one to more than 150 over the past seven years dramatically increasing student success.

AFFORDABILITY, MOTIVATION, AND EARLY MOMENTUM: MICRO-SCHOLARSHIPS AS A PATHWAY TO TRANSFER

Arizona State University and Maricopa County Community College District have reframed strategies for removing financial barriers, increasing early engagement, and developing student confidence by leveraging RaiseMe micro-scholarships as a student success strategy. This approach seeks to recognize the financial, academic, and social vulnerabilities that transfer students often face, and to address them early in the transfer pathway planning process.

This interactive session will explore:
  • The collaboration process used by ASU and MCCCD to develop micro-scholarship offerings
  • Best practices for engaging students in the RaiseMe program
  • Initial outcomes at the conclusion of the pilot year
  • Ongoing considerations and aspirations

About AZTransfer

FOR MORE THAN 20 YEARS, academic leaders from each of Arizona’s public postsecondary institutions have collaborated to support transfer student success. Known as the AZTransfer Steering Committee, this coordinating body ensures Arizona’s students have access to efficient, seamless, and simple ways to transfer from a community college to a university in Arizona. Born out of legislation passed in 1996, the AZTransfer Steering Committee works to fulfill a promise to provide high-quality educational pathways that lead to baccalaureate degree completion for all Arizonans.
