An associate's degree is earned after completing at least 60 credit hours of required courses at a community college. In addition to working on your AGEC courses you should think about what type of associate's degree you want to earn. There are several different types of Associate's Degrees available in Arizona, and depending on the bachelor’s degree you plan to pursue you have a choice of these degrees:
The Associate in Arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to four-year colleges and universities. In general, the components of the degree meet requirements for majors in the Liberal Arts or programs of study other than business or science, and will transfer as a block without loss of credit to Arizona's public universities. The AGEC-Ais a component within the AA degree.
Associate in Science (AS) Degree
The Associate in Science degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to Arizona's public universities in a variety of science-relate majors. In general, the components of the degree meet requirements for majors with more stringent math and math-based science requirements. Generally, the degree will transfer as a block without loss of credit to Arizona's public universities. The AGEC-S is a component within the AS degree.
Associate in Business (ABUS) Degree
The Associate in Business degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to Arizona's public universities into a variety of business majors. Generally, these degrees will transfer as a block without loss of credit to Arizona's public universities. The AGEC-B is a component within the ABUS degree.
Associate in Arts- Elementary Education (AAEE) Degree
The Associate in Arts- Elementary Education degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to an Elementary Education, Early Childhood, Multicultural/Multilingual, or Special Education program at an Arizona public university. Generally, the degree will transfer as a block without loss of credit to Arizona's public universities. The AGEC-Ais a component within the AAEE degree.
Associate in Arts- Fine Arts (AAFA) Degree
The Associate in Arts- Fine Arts degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to an Art, Dance, Theater, or Music related major at an Arizona public university. Generally, the degree will transfer as a block without loss of credit to Arizona's public universities. The AGEC-Ais a component within the AAFA degree.
Completing the appropriate associate’s degree provides a solid educational foundation, and you should only need an additional 56-60 university credits to complete your bachelor’s degree, with a total of 120 credits.
Associate's Degree Pathways Some universities and community colleges have also developed pathways of three years plus one year, or 90 community college credits and 30 university credits. Please check with your academic advisor about the availability of these pathways and the areas in which they are offered. Associate of Applied Science (AAS) Degrees The AAS degree is also being used in transfer in some career and technical areas.
