I'm looking for a degree in Elementary Education or Special Education - how can CAS help me?

There are two options for students interested in a career in Elementary Education or Special Education.

The first option is the statewide Associate of Arts in Elementary Education (AAEE) degree. Each community college has specific requirements for this degree, so you should check the AAEE degree listings for the specific courses required at the community college you plan to attend. The Associate of Arts in Elementary Education degree best serves students who choose to focus on Elementary Education or Special Education early in their community college program.

If you are a paraprofessional returning to the community college to earn an Associate’s degree to satisfy the federal “No Child Left Behind” mandate, the Associate of Arts in Elementary Education degree may the best option for you. By completing the entire Associate of Arts in Elementary Education degree, you will have also earned an AGEC-A. You will then be admissible to the university and your lower-division general education will be complete.

The second option is following the AA-SR pathway. This option may be a better choice if you have already begun taking classes at a community college and now have decided to pursue Elementary Education or Special Education as a career choice. You should begin by completing an AGEC-A. You can be sure that if you complete your AGEC, but then change your mind about your university or major - you'll still be admissible to the university and your lower-division general education will be complete. If you do not know which university that you plan to attend, check out the Arizona Transfer Pathway Guides to learn more about the options available to you! These guides are major specific, but not university specific. If you do know which university you plan to attend, the University Transfer Guides will be an important resource. Transfer Guides provide information for Arizona community college students about the courses they can take at the community college that will transfer to satisfy degree requirements for a particular university baccalaureate degree.

You can even go to CAS and create a personalized transfer planning guide. If you enter your courses in CAS, you can get a personalized view of how those courses would transfer and apply to a degree at one of the universities. You can create and save lots of different personalized transfer planning guides for different universities and different majors, and compare the results to see how the courses you've already taken will transfer best!

If you follow a university transfer guide - or a CAS personalized planning guide for a university degree - but then change your mind about your major, or the university you attend, you may find that your courses don't all transfer the way you expected, however. If you are not certain of the university and the major you're going to complete you should also look at information about the AGEC and the Transfer Pathways. The AGEC and the pathways are designed to help you ensure the best transfer of your credits even if you change your mind about your degree or your university.
