  1. MORNING BUSINESS
    1. Call to Order
    2. Introduction of members
    3. February minutes were ratified.
    4. Physics 111 survey distributed and discussed. Survey is attached.
    5.

    6. Discussed dual enrollment and the need to maintain control and quality.

Strong feelings against "dual credit courses" being offered at high schools was expressed.

Another long discussion was applying math prerequisites to astronomy courses and what the wording should be. Phrases being questioned were "requires high school algebra" and "requires working knowledge of algebra".

Pima College limits the dual credit courses in the high schools to only 100 level courses, does not mix high school with college students, enforces prerequisites, requires assessment and enforces placement out of assessment.

Some surprises also showed up in advising. At Yavapai, students could avoid being advised.

LUNCH Provide by GCC at direction of Dean Jean Ann Abel

  1. AFTERNOON BUSINESS

A. Dave Padgett presented articulation update. These are his notes.

  2. Automatically admit Arizona resident students who have completed an Associate Degree with 2.0 on a 4.0 scale or non-residents who have completed an Associate Degree with a 2.5 on a 4.0 scale.

Upper and Lower Division Course Criteria

Criteria developed by APASC Subcommittee and approved by APASC in 1998 - 99.

Implementation Guidelines shared with Chief Academic Officers - June 1999

Upper and Lower Division Course Criteria

  1. Common Courses and Pathways Confirmed
  2. CEG Evaluations
  3. New/Changes in ATF
  4. GEATF Resolution

Common Courses and Pathways Confirmed

Each ATF confirmed Pathways for baccalaureate degrees offered at three universities. Pathways identified were:

Associate of Arts General Requirements: AA/GR

Associate of Arts Special Requirements: AA/SR

Associate of Business General Requirements: ABus/GR

Associate of Business Special Requirements: ABus/SR

Associate of Science General Requirements: AS/GR

Associate of Science Special Requirements: AS/SR

Transfer Guides/Exceptional Requirements: TG/XR

Common Courses and Pathways Confirmed

ATFs that identified shared majors and pathway designation of General Requirements (GR) or Special Requirements (SR) confirmed common courses for lower-division preparation.

A minimum of 6 credits were identified for each major.

The following was confirmed by the ATF:

Common Pathway for this ATF was confirmed as the AS/SR*.

BS in Physical Science at NAU could be satisfied with AS/GR pathway (**).

The AGEC is Arizona General Education Curriculum - S

The Shared Majors are: BS, Physics, ASU

CEG Evaluations

Course equivalencies are basis for determining common courses.

Recommendations for changes to equivalencies forwarded from ATF to universities.

Evaluations processed throughout the academic year.

No CEG changes were reported at this meeting.

ATF Changes

Early Childhood Education ATF met for the first time in 1999.

The Computer Articulation Task Force will be divided into two separate ATFs

GEATF Resolution

As Approved and Adopted by APASC - 6/29/99

RESOLVED:That the GEATF affirms that changes to general education proposed by Arizona’s public institutions of higher education should:

(1) Consider transfer articulation, including equivalencies and general education applicability,

(2) Involve the GEATF early enough in the planning process to provide meaningful input into the development of changes, being sensitive to implementation timelines, and

(3) Include a proposed implementation date.

Transfer Articulation Update

Update of 1998 - 99 Activities

Projected Activities for 1999 - 2000

    1. Review and update the 1999-2000 Course Equivalency Guide for all community college districts
    2. Update on ASU, NAU and UA general studies requirements
    3. There was concern about the requirement for lab sciences to actually have "labs".

U of A tier 1 courses and one from NAU had no lab. Threat against labs extends to pressure from institutions to develop "lab" science courses online...with no real labs.

NAU is in the process of setting up a Liberal Studies approval process for courses that are not equivalent to courses in NAU's Liberal Studies.

    4. ATF member reports

Pima College

Dave Padgett from Pima surprised even some of the faculty from Pima by announcing that the school is planning to start a computer-enforced perquisite system. Discussion followed on how this would work.

III. ATF ORGANIZATION (PLANS AND AGENDA FOR NEXT MEETING)

The next meeting will be Friday, October 27, 2000 at Paradise Valley Community College at 10:00 am. We will eat in. Casey Durandt volunteered to be host and chair.

The morning session will be devoted to educational issues. The afternoon will focus on and transfer articulation including and CEG issues.
