Policy


AGEC-S is a 35-37 semester-credit lower division general education curriculum block that fulfulls the lower division general education requirements of majors with more stringent mathematics and mathematics-based science requirements.  The block will transfer without loss of credit from any Arizona public community college to any other Arizona public community college or university, and is for students who intend to transfer into majors with more stringent mathematics and mathematics-based science requirements.

AGEC-S Requirements

I.  Subject Area Requirements:

A. First-Year Composition:  6 semester credits

B. Mathematics: 3 semester credits
    (ASU, NAU, UA Physical Sciences: Calculus I or higher)
    (ASU Life Sciences: Math for Life Sciences, Calculus I or higher)
    (NAU and UA Life Sciences: Calculus I or higher)

C. Arts and Humanities:  6 semester credits

D. Social and Behavioral Sciences:  6 semester credits

E. Physical and Biological Sciences:  8 semester credits
    (Physical Sciences: University Chemistry or Physics sequence)
    (Life Sciences: University Chemistry or Biology sequence)

F. Options:  6-8 semester credits
    (Based on major and using a transfer guide, select math
     courses above Calculus I and/or science courses from
     astronomy, biology, botany, environmental science,
     chemistry, geology, physics, physical geography or zoology)

II.  Special Requirements:

A. Intensive Writing and Critical Inquiry

At least one course beyond the First-Year Composition requirement shall involve the development of competence in written discourse and involve the gathering, interpretation, and evaluation of evidence. Please see the community college catalogs for courses which satisfy the Intensive Writing/Critical Inquiry (IW/CI) requirement.

B. Awareness Areas

  1. One course emphasizing ethnic/race/gender awareness is required. Please see the community college catalogs for courses which satisfy this requirement; it is often referred to as the "cultural," or "C" awareness area.
  2. One course emphasizing contemporary global/international awareness or historical awareness is required. Please see the community college catalogs for courses which satisfy this requirement; it is often referred to as the "global," or "G" awareness area and the "historical," or "H" awareness area.
